Oliver Townend has rewritten the record books at the FEI Barefoot Retreats Burnham Market International Horse Trials this weekend (17-19 April), securing an extraordinary 17th victory in the event’s flagship class.
His latest triumph is made even more notable by the fact that he achieved it with the same brilliant mare who carried him to glory last year. Owned by Diana Ridgeon, Cooley Rosalent is rapidly building a legacy of her own at Burnham Market, having won the CCI3*-S in 2021 and now delivering back-to-back CCI4*-S victories in 2025 and 2026.
“I was very impressed with Cooley Rosalent in all three phases,” said Oliver. “She felt very confident. She’s a bit cheeky at this time of year, she’s always quite fresh, but a great result and a great result for Diana Ridgeon. Sadly, we lost Paul in the winter, that owned Cooley Rosalent. He was a great fan of this event and a great supporter of myself and Andrew Nicholson. So, it’s special to have Diana here and we couldn’t be happier with how the horse has gone.”
Reflecting on his long-standing relationship with the event, he added: “We’ve always felt that it came at the right time of year in general. The ground is extremely consistent, so it’s always been good, safe ground. Even when it’s on the firm side, it’s still very consistent and the horses seem to come out of this event very well. So, we’re a big fan of the event and a big fan of the courses here and the job that everyone is doing.
“It’s a number [17 flagship titles] that I didn’t think I’d ever get to but, at the same time, it’s getting close to 20 now so I’ll have to keep coming back!”
Oliver and Cooley Rosalent led the class from start to finish, completing on their dressage score of 22.3. They were joined on the podium by Gemma Stevens and Flash Cooley (27.6) in second and New Zealand’s Clarke Johnstone with Rocket Man in third (29.9).
In the CCI3*-S, Jenny Caras made her own piece of history, as the first American rider to claim an international title at Burnham Market. Riding Sommersby, owned by Jerry Hollis, she finished on her dressage score of 26.9. Sitting third after dressage, the pair produced two immaculate jumping rounds to climb into the lead.
“I’m super happy with Sommersby,” said Jenny. “He was very consistent in all three phases. He was so workman like and very professional all the way through the weekend. I really couldn’t have asked much more from him to be honest. He just went out there and did his best in all three phases and was really happy to take home the win.
“It’s quite special to be the first American winner of Burnham Market. Being able to come here and support the event is amazing and to take home that title is incredible. So, super special.”
Jack Pinkney took second place with Ayrton Senna, completing on their dressage mark of 28.2, and Hector Payne and Hidalgo continued their rise up the leaderboard to finish third (29.5).
With thrilling competition and a vibrant atmosphere from start to finish, Burnham Market once again proved why it remains a standout fixture in the eventing calendar. Energised by exceptional crowds who turned out in force to enjoy the sunshine and cheer on the action, the weekend delivered an unforgettable celebration of world‑class sport.

Event notice
It is with great sadness that we announce that Wellfields Casino Royale, a 9-year-old gelding ridden and owned by Shashank Kanumuri, was put down as a result of a fatal accident while competing at the FEI Barefoot Retreats Burnham Market International Horse Trials, Norfolk, in the CCI3*-S on 19 April 2026. Our heartfelt condolences are with all connections of Wellfields Casino Royale at this sad time.
Sunshine, big crowds, and a buzzing atmosphere made Saturday at the FEI Barefoot Retreats Burnham Market International Horse Trials feel like the weekend had truly arrived. Spectators streamed in from early morning, creating a brilliant backdrop for another full day of top-class sport and standout performances across the classes.
The question on many people’s minds this weekend is whether Oliver Townend can secure an unprecedented 17th victory in Burnham Market’s flagship class – and so far, he’s right on track. A lovely test from his defending champion, Cooley Rosalent, earned a score of 22.3 and the lead in the CCI4*-S heading into the jumping phases.
But he won’t have it all his own way tomorrow. Hot on his heels are the reigning World Champion, Yasmin Ingham with Banzai du Loir on 24.4, and Emily King with Valmy Biats on 25.2 – both well within striking distance.
Oliver faces some tough competition tomorrow if he wants that 17th win, as he is joined in the top three by the current World Champion, Yasmin Ingham and Banzai Du Loir (24.4), and Emily King and Valmy Biats (25.2).
The top three in the CCI3*-S remain unchanged, with no one able to better the early leaders: Emily King and Jackpot (25.3), Shashank Kanumuri and Gideon II (26.2), and Jenny Caras with Sommersby (26.9). Shashank delivered the best score of the day, moving into fourth with Wellfields Casino Royale.
The national classes provided plenty of excitement too, with tight finishes across the board. Wills Oakden enjoyed a superb afternoon, taking both Intermediate sections – Section I with DHI Nielson and Section J with Cooley Cormint. Kitty King and DSH Mr D claimed the Open Intermediate (Section K), while Oliver Townend added another win to his tally by taking the Advanced (Section L) with Dromgurrihy Gold.
Could today’s form be a sign of what’s to come as Oliver chases that historic 17th title tomorrow?

The opening day of the Barefoot Retreats Burnham Market International Horse Trials delivered a fabulous start to the weekend, with some impressive performances and enthusiastic crowds setting the tone for an exciting three days of sport.
In the CCI4*-S, New Zealand’s Clarke Johnstone and Rocket Man have taken an early lead after the first day of dressage with a score of 26.7. This class is looking set for a thrilling finale on Sunday, with the top five so far all separated by less than one mark and many more combinations hoping to stake their claim tomorrow – including last year’s champions, Oliver Townend and Cooley Rosalent.
“I was fairly pleased with my test”, said Clarke. “There were a couple of mistakes, but Rocket Man is a very beautiful horse, luckily for me. There were some real highlights as well – he did two good changes, which makes quite a difference in this test, where you get two marks for each change.
“I’m not sure if we’ll still be in the lead after tomorrow, I think I’ll probably be surprised if we are, but a really good place to be after today and nice that he’s feeling quite fresh and looking forward to the cross country. I’ve been out and had a look at the course and looking forward to tackling that on Sunday.”
Emily King and Jackpot currently have the lead in the CCI3*-S class, producing a lovely test for a score of 25.3. Shashank Kanumuri and Gideon II (26.2), and Jenny Caras and Sommersby (26.9) complete the top three after the first day of competition.
The national class winners on Friday were:
Novice Section C, Clarke Johnstone and LT Holst Mackintosh (31.8) Novice Section D, Aaron Otway and Jack Sparrow (29.3) Open Novice Section E, Bernhard Reemtsma and Lougherne Cash In Hand (27.8) Open Novice under 18 Section E1, Sofia Paul and Versailles Des Morins (34.8) BE100 Section F, Caroline Powell and Halcyon Happy Hour (32.3) BE100 Section G, Willa Newton and Cortada (28.5) BE100 Open Section H, Emily Philp and Ballinamurra Intrepid (27.5) BE100 Open under 18 Section H1, Flora Cheney and Speaks Volumes (22.5) GO BE100 Section H2, Alicia Wilkinson and FGF Eagle Star (36.3)

Townend targets historic win at FEI Burnham Market
With just days to go until the FEI Barefoot Retreats Burnham Market International Horse Trials (17–19 April), anticipation is building for a thrilling weekend of high‑octane international sport on the North Norfolk coast.
Many eyes will be on Oliver Townend, who heads to Burnham Market aiming to defend his CCI4*‑S title with Paul and Diana Ridgeon’s mare, Cooley Rosalent. Victory here last year saw Oliver reach an astonishing milestone – his 16th win in the flagship class at Burnham Market. Now, he returns hunting for an unprecedented 17th title, further cementing his legendary status at this much‑loved event.
Standing firmly in his way is a formidable line‑up of British and international challengers. Among them is Gemma Stevens, arriving in sparkling form following her recent victory in the Grantham Cup CCI4*‑S at Thoresby with Cooley Park Muze. Gemma brings enviable strength in depth, also saddling the exciting Chilli Morning IV, a winner of the 7‑year‑old championship at the FEI Eventing World Breeding Championships for young horses at Le Lion d’Angers, alongside Flash Cooley, who impressed last season with victories in the CCI4*‑L at Millstreet and CCI4*‑S at Lignières.
Another combination to watch out for is reigning World Champion Yasmin Ingham and her championship‑winning partner Banzai du Loir. Sidelined last year, a positive start to their spring campaign has put them firmly back on the radar. As they build towards earning a shot at defending their world title later this summer, Burnham Market provides a crucial opportunity to showcase their form on the international stage.
The event’s global appeal is underlined by strong overseas representation, with riders from Ireland, New Zealand, Japan and Brazil amongst those expected to be leading the fight over Alec Lochore’s beautifully designed tracks. One of the standout international contenders is USA’s Cosby Green, a rising star and current world number 10, who heads to Norfolk with her Badminton entries – Highly Suspicious and Jos UFO de Quidam – adding further depth and excitement to an already stellar field.
Set just minutes from the coast, FEI Burnham Market is renowned for its relaxed early‑season atmosphere and exceptional viewing, with the main arena acting as a natural amphitheatre where crowds can sit and watch the drama unfold. From promising young talent to established champions chasing history, the stage is set for an unforgettable weekend of eventing.
Jenny Meiklejohn, Event Organiser for Musketeer Event Management, said, “Burnham Market never fails to deliver a great spectacle, and with Oliver once again chasing history alongside a host of exciting combinations, spectators can look forward to a superb weekend of sport. The atmosphere, the setting and the quality of competition make this a brilliant early‑season highlight for everyone involved.”
Spectator tickets start from just £10 for adults and £4 for under‑15s, with free on‑site parking making FEI Burnham Market an easy and affordable day out for all the family. Tickets can be booked in advance here or purchased on the gate.
Gates open from 8am each morning, giving spectators plenty of time to settle in and enjoy the action, with competition beginning at 9am on Friday and Saturday, and from 8am on Sunday. Those unable to make it in person can still be part of the weekend, with live and on‑demand coverage of Saturday and Sunday’s international classes available via ClipMyHorse.TV.
Competing at FEI Burnham Market: a spring eventing experience not to be missed
Riders heading to the FEI Barefoot Retreats Burnham Market International Horse Trials can expect a weekend to remember. Competing at the Horse Trials is a great opportunity to gain experience riding over courses designed by event organiser, Alec Lochore – cross country course designer for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Alec’s tracks are renowned for being honest, educational and beautifully built, asking fair but thoughtful questions that help horses grow in confidence and ability.
For more than 25 years, Sussex Farm on the outskirts of Burnham Market has provided a competition environment that feels made for eventing. The dressage takes place in a peaceful, secluded area that helps horses focus, before moving on to the show jumping arena – a striking natural amphitheatre that creates a sense of occasion and offers impressive viewing, without overwhelming horses who are still gaining experience.
The cross‑country course, however, is where Burnham Market truly shines. Making full use of the land’s natural contours, Alec Lochore designs each track to ride beautifully on the well‑drained old turf. The established grass cover, combined with excellent natural drainage, provides riders with consistently good going.
A true education for horse and rider
One of the reasons Burnham Market is so highly regarded is the variety and quality of questions on the cross country course. Riders can expect to encounter:
Ditches
Hills and natural undulations
Corners
Combinations that challenge accuracy and balance
Whether you’re preparing for Badminton or Badminton Grassroots, whatever your future goals Burnham Market offers an ideal stepping stone for helping horses progress.
The BE100 classes provide a brilliant opportunity for less experienced horses and riders to enjoy everything Burnham Market has to offer. With the introduction of GO BE100 classes for 2026, this level is now more accessible than ever, giving riders the chance to experience the venue’s standout features – from show jumping in the impressive natural amphitheatre to tackling the beautifully presented water complex. It’s the perfect way to gain confidence and enjoy a high‑quality run at a premier event.
Novice
Burnham Market’s Novice classes offer riders a superb chance to develop horses in an educational, atmosphere‑rich setting. Jumping in the showjumping arena – a striking natural amphitheatre with excellent spectator viewing – gives horses exposure to a buzzing, atmospheric environment that mirrors the feel of higher‑level competition. Combined with Alec Lochore’s thoughtfully designed cross‑country questions, the Novice classes offer riders the perfect chance to build confidence, develop partnership, and prepare for the next step in their eventing journey.
Intermediate
Intermediate riders can expect a fair but challenging test at Burnham Market. The courses make excellent use of the undulating terrain, encouraging horses to improve balance, adjustability, and focus during the cross‑country. A true mix of technical obstacles on the cross country – including well‑presented ditches, corners, and combinations that require accurate, forward riding – are ideal for those aiming to consolidate experience at Intermediate or preparing to step up again.
Advanced
Burnham Market’s Advanced class asks genuine, top‑level questions, making it an excellent early‑season benchmark. For combinations preparing for major targets later in the season, the track provides the perfect opportunity to assess readiness and sharpen performance. Riders can expect to tackle proper, championship‑style questions – such as an angled hedge to an open corner, and other accuracy‑demanding combinations – all thoughtfully set across Burnham Market’s rolling terrain.
International
The International classes offer riders the chance to perform on a world‑class stage and join an impressive roll of honour that includes the likes of Laura Collett and fellow Olympic Gold medallist, Oliver Townend. Oliver holds an unprecedented 16 titles at the top level at Burnham Market!
Whether used as preparation for big targets to come or a shot at an early‑season title, these classes deliver high‑level sport with all the atmosphere and prestige Burnham Market is known for.

From here you can choose exactly which arena you want to watch, with the international tests taking place in the arenas closest to the warm‑up area. The warm‑up itself is a brilliant spot if you’d like a behind‑the‑scenes insight into how top riders and horses prepare before heading down the centre line.
Show jumping – the natural amphitheatre‑style arena offers comfortable, elevated viewing and superb sightlines from almost any position. With the shops and bar just a short stroll away, it’s an easy and enjoyable place to settle in and catch all the action.

The north Norfolk coast is renowned for its natural beauty, with miles of unspoilt coastline to explore. Stunning beaches such as Holkham and Brancaster are perfect for long walks, whether you’re stretching your legs after a busy day at the Horse Trials or giving your dog a run on the sand. The area is also home to an excellent selection of restaurants, offering everything from fresh local seafood to classic fish and chips – ideal for rounding off your visit with a great meal.

Combined with a relaxed early‑season atmosphere and some of the best viewing in eventing, Burnham Market offers a memorable weekend for riders, owners, and supporters alike.
Burnham Market’s renowned courses are designed by event organiser, Alec Lochore – cross country course designer for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
