Dubarry BYEH 4-Year-Old and 5-Year-Old Classes
The Dubarry BYEH 4-Year-Old class started the first day of The Saracen Horse Feeds Houghton International Horse Trials. Comprising of four different sections, Dressage, Show Jumping, Conformation and Potential and Suitability.
After the first three sections, eight competitors moved onto the Potential and Suitability phase, where they got judged on how suitable they were and their potential for the higher levels of eventing. Within this section, Caroline Day, on Caroline Bridge’s Bellagio got pulled in first gaining them an additional 10 points, with Nicole Mills on her own Joolz in second (gaining nine points) and Ginnie Turnbull on Antonia Brown’s Clapton pulled in third, gaining eight points. This meant that Ginnie won the class on Clapton with 82 points, qualifying her for the final at Burghley Horse Trials this September. Kelly Aldous on Sharon Cousins’ Winair BDA came second with 79 points, placing higher due to their show jumping score than Ros Canter on Alex Fishpool’s Khaleesi who also scored 79 points.
Ginnie Turnbull’s ride Clapton (pictured), is a grey gelding who Ginnie sounded very excited about. He was broken in by her husband and turned away, and has only been back in work for three weeks. According to Ginny, he is an amazing jumper and is likely to have a very exciting future ahead of him.
In the afternoon, it was the 5-Year-Olds turn to compete. After the first three sections, nine went through into the final stage, which included some very impressive individual gallops; the four-year-olds are not asked to gallop. Ros Canter was highest placed in this section, on her own Izilot DHI, gaining 10 points, Piggy French was the second to be brought forward on Gillian Aldous and Ann Tolhurst’s Cooley Performance, with Georgie Strang on Global Quest taking the third spot.
After these points had been added the final top three were announced. Samantha Hobbs on Geoffrey Burton’s I Diablo Joe (pictured) came first, Piggy French on Cooley Performance placed second and Caroline Powell on Chris Mann’s Greenacres Special Cavalier were third.
This was I Diablo Joe’s second qualification for the Dubarry BYEH final at Burghley, having also qualified last week at Rockingham Castle Horse Trials. This gelding has competed in eventing both last season and this season with good results and both Samantha and his owner are very excited about his future.
