The stage is set for the Keyflow Barbury International Horse Trials

Action gets underway at the Keyflow Barbury International Horse Trials and Show in Wiltshire this morning (7 July) and, with a glorious spell of British summer weather forecast to bathe the Southwest this weekend, visitors can expect a real treat.

Set on the stunning Marlborough Downs, the horse trials at Barbury is widely regarded as a jewel in the crown of eventing in Britain. Throughout the four days of the competition more than 500 horses and riders will be competing in the grounds of the Barbury Castle estate, including some of the best in the world.

Tokyo Olympic Team Gold medallist and this year’s Badminton winner, Laura Collett needs little introduction. With international wins at 3*, 4* and 5* already this season, Laura will be looking to add another in the CCI-S 4* at Barbury. She has two nine-year-olds entered – the gelding, Moonlight Charmer with whom Laura finished third in the CCI-L 3* at Houghton last year; and the mare, Bling who will be having her first run at 4*.

Laura’s Tokyo teammate, Tom McEwen will be looking to add to the results he has been enjoying so far this season. He holds three entries in the CCI-S 3*, including the promising mare Falaise De Riverland with whom he recently finished fourth in the CCI-L 2* at Houghton. Tom will also no doubt have high hopes for Brookfield Benjamin Bounce in the CCI-S 4* – a ten-year-old gelding with whom he has already enjoyed 3* success this year, winning at Burnham Market and finishing runner up at Rockingham in May.

The current Burghley winner, MGH Grafton Street, is one of Pippa Funnell’s two entries in the CCI-S 4*. The pair finished fifth in the class at Barbury in 2019 before going on to 5* success that year and Pippa will no doubt be hoping for a repeat of some similar form this year.

The cross country at Barbury will run over stunning, rolling downland and, thanks to the natural amphitheatre of the landscape, spectators will be able to enjoy a superb view of the action as it unfolds.

As well as experiencing some fantastic sport, there will also be an excellent range of trade stands for visitors to explore, plenty of delicious food stalls and family entertainment, including the Shetland Pony Grand National and inter-hut relay.
