FEI Barefoot Retreats Burnham Market International Horse Trials – Saturday Round-up
Day 2 of the FEI Barefoot Retreats Burnham Market International Horse Trials delivered another fantastic day of competition, set against the stunning back drop of the north west Norfolk coast. There was a great atmosphere around the site as the promise of some top-class sport and an appearance from the sun drew a sizeable Saturday crowd to Sussex farm.
One of the most hotly anticipated tests in the CCI-S 4* (Section B) was that of Laura Collett and her Tokyo Olympic gold medal winning partner, London 52. The pair didn’t disappoint, delivering a sub 20 score of 19.8 and moving into the lead ahead of tomorrow’s jumping phases. Oliver Townend and Cooley Rosalent have moved into second after a performance which earned them a score of 23.4, and the overnight leader, Emily King and Valmy Biats now sits in third, with their score of 25.4.
“Absolutely delighted with Dan,” said Laura after their test. “He felt on the button and listening to me, maybe missed the wow factor without the crowds but he was very accurate which made up for it!”
There was also a new leader in the CCI-S 3* (Section A), with Yasmin Ingram and Gypsie du Loir delivering a lovely test to put them on a score of 26.1. The overnight leader, Pippa Funnell and MCS Maverick (26.3) are now lying second, and Bubby Upton and It’s Cooley Time have moved into third (26.6).
“Gypsie really excels in the dressage phase with her fabulous paces,” said Yasmin. “There is such exciting potential for her future. She was very happy to be back out at her first international of the year, which led to a few lively moments, but overall a very impressive test.”
The crowds were not only able to enjoy some superb dressage performances, but they were also treated to a thrilling day of cross country for the national classes. With the event celebrating its 25th Anniversary this weekend, it was nice to see some long-standing supporters of the competition amongst the winners.
Oliver Townend and William Fox-Pitt both added yet another tally to their many appearances on the Burnham Market scoresheet, Oliver taking the intermediate class with Tynan Cooley and William the Advanced with Grafennacht, and it was also a good day for Ros Canter. Ros, who is Norfolk based, took both sections of the OI – Section J with Izilot DHI and Section K with MHS Seventeen.
The national class winners on Saturday were:
Intermediate Section I, Oliver Townend and Tynan Cooley (31.1)
